Homocysteine Test

The Homocysteine Test is a venous blood test that measures the level of homocysteine, a key intermediate in methionine metabolism.

When homocysteine is too high or too low, it can point toward issues with B vitamin status (B12, B6, folate), betaine or choline need or genetic variations that influence enzymes such as MTHFR, CBS and MS.

Because homocysteine plays a central role in sulphur amino acid metabolism, imbalances may also affect the production of glutathione and taurine, potentially increasing oxidative stress and influencing cardiovascular, neurological and metabolic health.

A venous blood draw is required, and this test must be centrifuged immediately after collection. The price does not include phlebotomy.

You will need to arrange your own private phlebotomist who has a centrifuge to spin the sample.

Please note: this is a results-only service. Your test report will be provided for your own review, and no consultation or personalised interpretation is included.

Biomarker included:

Homocysteine

When is this test useful?

You may consider this test if you’re exploring cardiovascular risk, stroke risk, neurological symptoms, chronic fatigue, inflammation or suspected B vitamin deficiencies.

Homocysteine is a useful marker when assessing methylation function, detoxification capacity, oxidative stress and nutrient-related factors that influence overall cardiovascular and neurological wellbeing.

Preparation Instructions

Fasting for a blood test:

For the most accurate results, please fast for 8 hours before your blood draw. Morning appointments after an overnight fast are recommended.

Stay well hydrated:

Drink 2–3 litres of plain water the day before and at least 500ml 1–2 hours before your appointment. Good hydration helps improve the quality of your sample and makes the venous draw easier.
